About the Job
The Scientist II, Computational Biology will work as part of a new
product team, focused on improving blood-based cancer diagnostic
capabilities in areas such as cancer detection, minimum residual
disease, and other related applications. This team is comprised of
talent from across the Roche ecosystem, including Roche
Diagnostics, Roche Pharma and Foundation Medicine, operating as a
single unit.--
The Scientist II, Computational Biology on the Computational
Biology team collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of
scientists by developing the computational analytics components of
future products and enriching the analytical capabilities of
existing products.
Key Responsibilities
- Work in an interdisciplinary team of computational biologists,
data scientists, molecular biologists, and software engineers
focused on developing diagnostic products using massively parallel
sequencing of nucleic acids from liquid biopsy samples.
- Lead development of algorithms and new computational methods
for identifying clinically-relevant genomic and epigenomic
alterations in tumor DNA and RNA derived from clinical
specimens.
- Enhance and optimize existing methods, improving assay
capabilities and technical robustness.
- Oversee collaborative software development and validation
efforts.
- Process, analyze, and interpret high volumes of data for the
development and validation of methods.
- Incorporate new findings of cancer biology and data from novel
molecular biology methods into existing computational
pipelines.
- Present scientific and technical data to colleagues in a clear
and cohesive manner.
- Work independently and prepare timetables, deliverables, and
project schedules.
- Assist in protecting intellectual property invented during
product development.
- Mentor junior colleagues and collaborate with project
teams.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
- Master's Degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational
Biology, Computer Science, or a related field
- 2+ years of experience in NGS based research or computational
work in medical diagnostics
- Academic or professional study/work with molecular biology
and/or genomics
- Proficiency in Python
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of molecular biology and genomics
- Experience:
- contributing to a complex production analytical system
- with next-generation (NGS) sequencing data
- in cancer research, including a working understanding of
computational approaches for cancer genome analysis
- leading collaborative projects with colleagues in other
disciplines
- with data science best practices and tools, including pandas,
jupyter, AWS cloud computing, and machine learning
techniquesanalyzing data with Pandas in Jupyter notebooks
- usage of workflow language (e.g. Cromwell, Nextflow,
Snakemake)
- Demonstrated ability to: work independently in a
multidisciplinary, fast-paced, dynamic, and results oriented
environment present data to a multidisciplinary audience in a clear
and cohesive manner
- Excellent teamwork, time management, and organizational
skills
- Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of patient data
privacy
